Clues
- 01In late December 1980, airmen from two adjacent U.S. Air Force bases in England reported a series of encounters with unexplained lights — and possibly a landed craft — over three consecutive nights in the forest between the bases.
- 02Deputy Base Commander Lt. Col. Charles Halt walked into the forest on the second night, tape recorder running, narrating what he saw in real time. That 18-minute recording is now in the UK National Archives.
- 03The site sits in East Anglia, a flat coastal region best known during the Cold War for its concentration of American air power. The nearest town of note has a working waterfront on a tidal river estuary about 8 miles from the North Sea.
- 04The most durable skeptical explanation involves a lighthouse visible through the tree line from certain angles — roughly 5 miles to the east, on a shingle spit at the mouth of a river estuary.
- 05The forest lies in the county just south of Norfolk, at approximately 52.1° N, 1.4° E, between a small market town to the northwest and the coast to the east.
